International School Dhaka: Creating future-ready global citizens

In the 21st century, being academically strong is no longer enough. We are living in a time when we need to put as much importance on other qualities. Empathy, cultural sensitivity and awareness are essential attributes for a better and more peaceful world. To excel in this era, learners must be able to empathize with diverse perspectives, take meaningful actions and adapt to ever-changing realities.

To achieve this, students need a balanced curriculum. They need to excel academically while they also develop essential critical thinking, research, leadership, communication and social skills.  Just as important are arts, sports, and, of course, good health. Being a global citizen goes well beyond the classroom, into areas such as community service,

The International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum does exactly that by focusing on the student’s development through a more skill-based conceptual curriculum, one that prioritizes their academic potential and interests outside the classroom. It’s a curriculum that increases cultural awareness, adaptability, and a deep understanding of the global perspective.

While most schools in Bangladesh still follow the traditional structure, some keep pace with the ever-evolving world through the IB curriculum. International School Dhaka (ISD) began its journey 25 years ago with the IB and altered how young people learn and prepare for challenges in the interconnected world.

The school strives to provide a globally-relevant education that will develop its students’ knowledge and make them good global citizens. With teachers and students from more than 30 countries, the school is proud of the diverse knowledge, perspectives and experiences its community brings. It teaches appreciation of different cultures, which helps its students thrive when they go on to higher education study around the world.

After nurturing successful minds for 25 years, its students are benefitting from unique opportunities to keep learning and developing their skills both inside and outside classrooms. We live in a world that is led by science and technology. By partnering with Carnegie Mellon University the renowned US college, with a world-class research-backed robotics program, the school provides its students with opportunities to learn coding, programming, computational thinking, using Lego and VEX kits. This phenomenal opportunity equips the students with the skills and mindset to innovate.

The school has also partnered with Barcelona Academy, the official academy of FC Barcelona, which brings the Barca football training methodology specifically modeled for children aged from 6 to 18. Additionally, licensed instructors from Australia’s national organization AUSTSwim have partnered with the school to teach students about swimming, water safety, and regulations through distinguished courses.

Moreover, another benefit of the IB curriculum is the opportunity for students to pursue the IB Bilingual Diploma, which our school offers with Bengali and other mother tongues through the School-Supported Self-Taught (SSST) program, overseen by the Mother Tongue Coordinator. This enables students to study multiple literatures and languages, including Mandarin, Korean, or French, fostering a deeper appreciation and understanding of different cultures. All this helps them to appreciate and understand different cultures, broadening their horizons to embrace diverse opportunities.

It is this international outlook which perfectly underlines the School’s new mission, to prepare students for global citizenship and academic success through a dynamic IB curriculum, supported a diverse community. Innovative learning is at the heart of its vision, supported by the values of wellbeing, kindness and responsibility – all absolutely critical for a fairer and more peaceful world.

The school’s strong commitment to nurture young minds believes that no student is unworthy of receiving good opportunities if they have strong academic ability, leadership potential, and a commitment to co-curricular activities. It now offers scholarships to young people from Grades 9-11 from ages 14-17 years old. They’ll receive a full waiver on the admission fees and between a 50 and 90% scholarship on their school fees.

ISD and its IB programs cater to students’ passions and potential, and provide them with opportunities to develop their skills in diverse fields, whether that is arts, sports, or tech. It encourages students to think outside the box and learn more about the world around them to be better global citizens and contribute to society by creating a better and more peaceful world.
